A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: i was tempted to alter some wording dating the poem's original tech environment - although email was around, i think :-) , in 1996, it was not a usual thing
writing on paper was still the preferred mode (with people lamenting the use of the telephone, no cells yet either, and especially the "cordless" - and "losing" the art of writing) - how ironic: now people email, writing in a spoken mode; and more and more, text
writing has gone from paper to disparaged as lost to the phone to digital via computer back to writing, but on the phone! - next we'll be talking face to face again, but on the telephone :-)
also, this poem shows one of the forms i sometimes like to use, often called concrete poetry, as it mimics the shape of the thing described or pondered - in my case, compared to a lot of contemporary examples, a fairly mild form :-)

"the act of giving your thoughts to one you love can be as important as

The message said
in a word
or two
and between the lines,
“all is well”
- and such. But more,
because you wrote,
the message also said,
I need, I want
to speak with you.
The message said,
let us share
our little time, both
our big and tiny plans;
let me touch you with my
thoughts spun through these my
fingers to the paper you are holding now.
The message said, let us remember each other’s
hearts
and hear each other’s easy smile and feel each
other’s
sometimes shy sometimes wondering glance.
And the message, as in a bottle,
did arrive.
