"Road to Lost Maples State Park"

one of my all time favorites

i had wanted to visit lost maples, the different-from-anything-else in texas state park since i don't know when, long time

word has it one has to make reservations way ahead to visit there during the fall, when the only celebrated full flush fall flash of color occurs in texas, and can be enjoyed without having to crop most of the eye's view out to pretend we've got fall foliage  :-)

so winter's a good time, one can actually get in the park on a whim

sheila and i had driven out to fredericksburg for an art show, then on to ingram and hunt, where the guadalupe river splits (or joins, depending which way you're going), and a lady mentioned, when she heard us wondering out loud what to do next, that lost maples was only a short ways down the road: couple of hours, definitely a short ways here in texas, like crossing houston during rush hour, but more scenic  :-)

my artist commentary for my poem, "enchanted rock," below, has some talk of how this area differs from wimberley; but really, once you pass the point of enchanted rock, the main road to lost maples feels more rolling with high rounded hills stretching pretty far out; and this is before you get to the cuts in the pass leading to the entrance, i'll try and post the painting soon

the day was misty soft in the morning, the dried hill grasses rusty with winter

it was quiet, and still, and felt tall

so i've kept this painting in my art room for all these years, and felt, since i was posting the poem about enchanted rock, maybe it was time to let it out

it's hard to believe this is in the same state as all the feelings one can get in galveston; 'course, in most parts of the country, this far inland, this would be another state  :-)
