Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: another fun type of poem, like those i call my image-poems (like "a grandchild sometimes is..." and many others like it) i really like doing, is the stream of consciousness poem
i don't do as many stream of thought poems as i do image or activity-rich (like "a daughter sometimes is...") poems, probably cause i haven't concentrated as much on that mode of being or at least expressing that state of mind, but they're fun to do
in some ways, the stream of thinking poem is fairly easy to do, just let one's mind and feelings go, pay attention to bodily cues and responses, and try to document it as it all arises; the challenge for me is in making the whole work flow to reflect the experience, be entertaining, and keep the reader's interest
like, "my hungry heart", i've also posted the original poem version from 1994 for the reader's comparison; the form remained, but as is want to do when i work from a stream of thought work pattern, a very fluid pattern even if discernable, the work will change
in a dense work like this, the comparison / contrasts are a little harder to find sometimes, but they're definitely there
( added feb 17 '08: though i never ran a full marathon, my brother rene has, i used to run 3 miles a day and got a good feel for what it might be like; a good related poem is "cross country" )

Marathon
You’re off.
Feels good each foot to the ground
knees up slightly, carefully, bringing
air to your lungs feeling fuller than
sails but at a pace, 26 miles, land route,
so pace, pace is the thing, your mind
starts counting cooking ways to measure
the steps passing in time to a steady heart,
warming steps, pacing your mind, lifting your
consciousness slightly beyond pains growing
faintly warmly below, twinges stretching
attention away from the pace, the race to
continue to finish the race but that’s further
further ahead at the end of the pacing the
end of the racing the end of the pains walls
slamming your mind shoutings with pain arms
stretching waking shaking your chest aching
to speed to stop but pace pacing you must pace
pace to finish this race the pacing racing to the click
of your heart in your ears your eyes swollen beat
racing down to your feet deaf with the roar
of the crowd crowding the line at the
end of the street racing the roar
your eyes in your throat....
You’re done.

(Original Poem)
You’re off and it feels good foot to ground
knees up slightly almost bringing the air to
your nostrils as your lungs begin filling
feeling fuller than sails on a wide open... well,
this is a 26 plus mile route over land
so pace, pace is the thing as your mind
starts to count and cook up ways to measure
your steps passing the time in steady heart
warming steps pacing your mind lifting
your consciousness slightly beyond the pain
growing below in your body, maybe a twinge
beginning to stretch your attention away from
the pace, the race to continue to finish the
race but that’s further ahead at the end of the
pacing the end of the race the end of the pain
that’s built a wall slamming your mind
slamming your pain your now painfully waking
body into aching to speed to stop to anything
but pace pacing you must pace to finish this
race the pace racing to the click of your heart
swollen beat racing down in your feet inside
your mind your ears deaf with the roar
of your blood and the crowd crowding the line
at the end of the street with the roar and....
You’re done.

The text presented in the photo example below is how we print, a more cursive pretty font that won't reprint well here.
