A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: difficult to express how even more difficult the balance of order and chaos is maintained by our belief, our dependence, on the rule of law
the lawyer is the instrument we as society have licensed to maintain order between us, settling and clarifying disputes without the need for recourse to violence
I have both a strong need and belief for not only the law as written, but its spirit, which, i believe, in turn, directs the written portion
thus this poem tries to express some of the tension between the need for the profession of lawyers, and the sometimes conflicting realization of resenting that need
there are several more law profession poems already written to be posted in the near future
this particular gift is received well in rich wood frames, or an economical easel suitable for a busy desk or mantle

Lawyer
Often maligned.
Even when desperately needed.
Maligned for willing to fight
for your rights and mine, without prejudice.
An equalizer without a gun.
A guide through the forest of statutes, laws,
ordinances, and other rules of order often
obscuring that one saving sentence, that one
lonely precedent, that lost winding passage that
hopefully
will keep us from false accusations, or worse,
ruination, fines, and imprisonment,.
The lawyer is our interpreter.
Revealing true meaning,
checking the balance
of our true power.
The Law.
