Review: ArtExpo New York 2007
One Year Later - 2008

if you've arrived here first, you may not know i've recently re-posted, updated with links, my actual day-to-day, blow-by-blow, fun-swirl nightly newsletter re-caps from new york doing my first show with artexpo new york in 2007
the following are my reflections, review, and commentary of my results on actually exhibiting at artexpo 2007 in new york, seen "about" one year later; thank you much,

"one year later...2008..."
...well, to the show itself, almost one year later
as for the dates for selecting booth location, the pictures to take, hotel and airfare, setting up insurance and shipping (even if i did make some wrong decisions there), creating pr (including a nice artcard mailed and given out to galleries, media, and friends), and, especially important for me, securing sufficient financing and arranging pet care for our two dear kittys, then, "past a year later"
but to the date when either it was ready or wouldn't be, the calendar and emotional moment of no backing out, and the days i no longer was waiting vaguely, but rather - acutely, for the trip itself - it was about this time a year ago
the big art show question:
so what have i learned, or can say, relevant to going to artexpo new york 2007?
well, the first thing most artists, and many friends and supportors ask is, would i go back? will i go back?
good question
short answer to "would i?" - yes short answer to "will i?" - maybe
the longer qualified answer to "would i?" is if, because the show is expensive and I don't live in the new york area, I had enough discretionary money
with an ability to attend financially, I definitely would; it was fun, it was helpful, it was useful; i met two artists i hope continue to get the attention they deserve; one, glenn tunstull, was at the show himself; the other, vic mastis, contacted me asking me about the show, if it was worth it
following an internationally recognized design career, glenn has commited himself to expressing himself through his fine art paintings; though he's from the northeast, many of his colorful, large color dot (really more organic in shape than a dot) coastal renditions remind me terribly of galveston, capturing wind swept sun-drenched days just "being"
vic i never met, though we've corresponded 'most a year now; her site shows an extensive awards recognition in her st louis and surrounding area, and she recently completed her first exhibiting at artexpo, but in their first show in las vegas! her images on-line of her use of gold leaf are fabulous
and i also was able to connect with a nice gallery in the mid-atlantic area
but, still, it is clearer to me now, it was not enough that first go-round for me back then, that fun cold early march, to risk the future with borrowed or back-up monies; and that hard dow jones average stock exchange drop the day we flew into new york, that most everyone said was a "fluke" but no longer appears that way, may have imprinted me with more caution than i'd realized that long expectant flight ago
so, re "will I?" - there probably isn't a longer answer - too many things can change for the better or worse, even with proper financing
what's changed in my art world:
additionally, two things have changed or evolved in the art world for me in the year in-between:
one: I have decided to no longer separate my visual (painting) and literary (writing) sides; and I am much more satisfied creatively
two: I am in the process of discovering the expanding world of on-line marketing
personal change: the first, joining my creative halves, is not much of a problem, other than that the major trade shows for each creative outlet is a different venue: artexpo and the national stationery show (which my wife and I exhibited at in new york in the late 90's; see we've been perservering and creating and searching for awhile now) - thus again, even more money needed to physically show
marketing change: the second change, or evolvement, in the business side of making art, is having a huge impact re will I show again at something like artexpo; even if I should ever significantly succeed with my arts, it's unknown to me at this time if physcially showing at a huge venue like the national stationery show or artexpo would help or reveal my work any better than what's occurring via the internet
yet, yes, there is something genuine, even necessary, about seeing art "live" - especially visual work like mine that carries texture on the surface as part of the artwork; and there's even more to be said re meeting people in person, even those strongly email-addicted :-)
still, in the interim, I've fairly well come to the conclusion, as the emerging wave of on-line marketing becomes more available to relative beginners like myself, with terms such as keywords, seo, rss feeds, google (and others) publishing, and adsense, that the way of my immediate future is linked with virtual lines
i should add, i applied quite a few various marketing lines to my showing in 2007: the artcard, which was given or mailed to media, buyers, and galleries; print ad in art business news of several images; a double email blast of mine and several other artists' images to a huge email list, which i also forwarded to my own list; and another print ad, this on the large fold-out floor map of all the booths at artexpo 2007, with the ad running along the edge with other artists who chose to pay for that also
hard to say which had the most immediate impact then, though with today's rss feeds, the email blast, it seems, would be even more effective today
sub-conclusion:
today, there simply is too much for someone with limited funds, much less interested in more optimal marketing, to ignore the evolvement of digital marketing
conclusion:
it's a testament to the new marketing availability via the internet that my recently posted recaps of my early newsletter efforts almost a year ago, enhanced with internal and external links, has as good a chance to reach as many varied people as i did during those daunting if fun five days almost one year ago
so, one year later, i find myself hopefully providing what my internet search, a bit over a year ago didn't - a first hand, personal, substantial look at an emerging, if older, then 56 year old artist doing artexpo for the first time, and enjoying it :-)
