Review: ArtExpo New York 2007

Day 1

Artist Update: January 6, 2008
the following is a repost of my newsletter mailing on march 1, 2007; any links now included have been added; other than any glaring grammatical errors or spelling, all other text has been left as the original; thank you much

refreshing, that's what i heard most about my work, including from what's called a platinum exhibitor, ie, big guy whether this'll pan out or how much if any, we'll see

it seems what these particular people are liking are both my style and choice of subject matter, they like that i'm doing images of where i live, and they like that, as one said, i have monet "down" :-), the natural look

i explained it was coincidence that both monet & i arrived at our textured style kinda by accident; evidently, because he would only paint an image at the particular time of day he'd first started, he'd leave the painting when the light changed and start another, then return the next day or sometimes several days later to resume that picture, then the paint would've dried a bit, and the next layer of undiluted paint from the tube built the texture up naturally as he worked

for me, 'cause i work full time, i start an image, using a digital i'd taken myself (better than saying "i shot myself" :-) then return to it the next day or several days later as i can; thus the same process occurred to me, the paint built up naturally; i wasn't copying anyone, and i wasn't intending for this to happen, as neither had monet; interesting; and i guess i've stressed the "natural" part, cause there's plenty of really competent, really pretty, really expensive art here, that, to me, seems just a touch too stiff; if there's anything worth keeping from this first day of the show, it's that i'm on the right track

anyway, sheila & i have taken lots of mini tours around the show, i made a contact w/the editor of art business news that explained how i can send in info to them on new originals and prints and they could be featured as an art news item in their section on new art stuff going on, and, saw first hand the output on 44 inch wide canvas! (from the same kinds of files i usually make 8x10 prints) from an "almost affordable" epson wide format printer

we've been told to enjoy the time to talk w/people today and tomorrow, 'cause when the show opens to the public (today & tomorrow are "trade" days) it'll be standing room only; we'll see :-)

as a side note, one interested visitor said he thought the play Wicked had the best production he'd ever seen finally, sheila likes to tell everyone back home, via phone and postcards, that this is the biggest art show of its kind in the world; i like to add, yea, explains why we keep getting lost :-)

thanks ya'll,
