Artist's Comment: other than with a few friends for a few times, i never played basketball much, especially compared to baseball, where i started in peewee league; but i enjoyed it and enjoyed watching it and listening to my more basketball-able friends talk about it
i always was struck by the contrast, or maybe i should say crunch, between the smooth gliding style of play and pure physical force involved and the psychological walk-the-line finesse balancing those two
this was fun to write and has almost always elicited a positive response from those who actually play the game

Basketball
Different from football
where physical contact
is not only allowed but required.
Here contact is a foul.
So, with incredible suaveness of movement,
(get that elbow outta my eye!)
an effortless grace characteristic of ballet,
(jam that forearm in my
neck again and I’ll...)
the basketball player glides through
the lane rising on air to
(I’ll knee your neck!)
finger roll a lay up worthy of art.
Or, with behind the back passes
that dazzle the eye and blind
the opponent,
(one more bump from your fat
head and you’ll know why!)
we see who will drive
to the hoop. Basketball is surely
the sport of angels.
