A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: this was written well before my dad had passed away oct last year ('06); and was when he first retired but was still going out finding repair work to do (he'd been in construction most his life, i guess all of mine to then), and i wanted to describe both how i remembered him when i was young, and how i hoped he'd be at the then present time, enjoying his years

"the act of giving your thoughts to one you love can be as important as
the thought itself" - adan
Dad
I remember you so tall
you might’ve been a tree
so wide, arms so thick
I knew you might be
a wrestler too.
Only I didn’t know then
what you’d wrestled with
day in day out, working
standing up to the world,
bosses, short pay, standing
up like a tree to feed us, shade us.
I remember now the later years,
me in a hurry for that date
or movie, only momentarily seeing
the tiredness in your shoulders,
the light a little less bright
in your eyes. You were still
standing up to a world I’ve
only just begun to wrestle with.
It’s your turn to rest and
take in a movie. It’s your
turn to play. Please do. Please
know I know you worked
so hard for me to learn to live.

Special notes:
The text presented in the photo example below is how we print, a more cursive pretty font that won't reprint well here.
Also, we adjust the font size of the title, copyright, personalization, to fit both the writing itself, and the constraints of the mat opening (window) of the 8x10's we use.
