just a quick note of interest to anyone in the austin area or elsewhere
that might visit austin

this week the city opened the very frequently delayed very long awaited
new park situated next to palmer convention center, and bounded by barton
springs rd to the south and riverside dr and lady bird lake to the south

i fully expected this park to be nice, but it's even nicer; this is a job
well done; the many workers filling more soil around the multitude of
trees planted, clearly kept looking up at the growing body of bodies
strolling into the park with expectant relieved and very pleased eyes

after enjoying breakfast at the newly opened rustic northern italian
bistro "gypsy" (http://www.go2gypsy.com/) (the pinini's on rustic bread
were yummy, the coffee smooth and fresh), sheila and i literally crossed
the road and entered the new park

slender light poles trace the curving paths into the main grounds; each
path with more curving offshoot paths leading to benchs, open cobblestoned
rounds, tree clusters; and all around views views views

palmer's long sloping roof anchors the view to the right while the still
emerging austin skyline streaks across the center distance beyond the
trees and paths; to the left in the distance is a small hill, people
already circling the path to the top

varied vegetation of shrubs and trees are blooming and taking root,
sometimes in small patches, other times in clusters with huge boulders
acting as hardy accents, and always a light breeze from the river

no skateboarders or scooters or bicycles are allowed, so the walk is easy
and free of fear of being scraped too close; and only one man (this
morning) of all the people with pets in leashed-tow had his poor trailing
loose confused dogs wondering where they were supposed to be going (the
older dog at several points just sat himself on some soft damp grass and
refused to run the 50 feet to where his master had gone on ahead of him)

so the walking to the lightly raised hill built from the curvy fountained
pond beside it was easy, and nice

a large round flat area right before the hill has a dozen or two jets of
water that rise and diminish over and over as more and more little
children ran through and to and between the rising shrinking italian
cypress shaped fountain shoots; little ones spotting what was ahead would
run in full body burst straight to the water and other kids; there were a
lot of parents with big smiles

the path to the top of the hill circles gradually and gently (small lights
dot the path waiting for nightfall, the park is open til 10 pm) giving an
increasingly higher 360 view of the park grounds, the city, the river,
palmer and the soon to open long center, and even the hill rising up
dawson road from barton springs where we'd walked from and live

along with benches to sit and enjoy the views, a surprise engraved map of
texas awaits you at the top, with key cities indicated and the mileage
from austin to those cities

i can't say in all honesty that this now puts austin, with it's town lake
and barton springs and zilker park complex adjacent to this new park,
equal to something like central park ny or the banks of the seine, but in
texas?  and though i can and am greedy and hungry for more (after all, i
am an artist), i can't complain  :-)

don't know if this link will work for you, but it has some nice photos
from the austinamerican statesman newspaper online of the park
