"Houston Skyline from Sabine Street Bridge"
hard to realize sometimes this was the scene of many of my childhood explorations growing up in houston, this area of buffalo bayou
two churches i grew up going to, St Stephens and St Josephs, are fairly near by
and the houston skyline, well, from my parents' home, near white oak bayou and tc jester, the esperson bldg was 'bout the tallest thing we could see from the bridge near our house, and it's not even visible anymore in this scene
but i love the way the skyline's evolved - i imagined it being this way one day, but never thought it'd be as grand and to the extent it is now
and still, if one turns 180 degrees, and faces west on this sturdy bridge between allen pkwy and memorial drive, is a vastly cleaned up and beautified portion of houston just bursting to go wild again, if not trimmed and cared for regularly ;-)
a good view of this "other view" from the bridge, is in my painting "Houston Buffalo Bayou from Sabine Street Bridge" - the painting itself is much softer (in real life) than i've been able to reproduce online; kinda like the people in houston itself

"Austin Late at Night"
when i painted "Austin at Night" in 2002, i had no idea how much the austin skyline would change, especially with such an iconic image the Frost Tower makes
so, in 2004, i followed up, with "austin late at night"
and now, already more buildings have been added to the austin skyline since i finished this painting back in 2004
i think this particular painting captures my sense of austin, very late at night, when the bars have closed, most people have made their way home, and just a few people remain out and about, sleepy, tired, but probably feeling fairly happy ;-)

Artist Commentary
"Austin at Night"
a grand evening image of the austin skyline
my wife and i had been at the huge gathering celebrating one of lance armstrong's tour de france early victories, and had gone behind the stage set up by then town lake (now lady bird lake) and decided to stroll along the path by the shore
lots of other people were doing the same
it felt we were back stage, as we were literally behind the giant temporary stage, and in relative darkness with all the lighting on the other side of the night's action
cool night october air was a grand relief from the usual hot austin weather that lingers well into october and sometimes november
people in canoes and small boats were anchored near by on the river, or slipping slowly past in no hurry to leave the night
the image in the painting is very much what it looked like that night - i believe the texture and deep tones help capture the restful upbeat feeling everyone seemed to enjoy
the skyline has changed quite a bit, many new original design buildings have since been raised, but much else is the same
lady bird lake, even with its name change, the path along the shore, the cool evenings after the warm or hot days, and people enjoying the chance to be in so much nature, in the midst of so much urbanness, is all, still, very much there

Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: a really sweet poem i very much enjoyed creating, thinking back to my own pre-youth :-) and watching all the little ones around me with their dads, including my own now-grown son!
most the children who loved this work were so young it had to be read to them to see if they liked it enough to give to their dad, and most of them would squeal and clap their hands and smile smile smile
i was very lucky to still have this sentiment available to me
the "mommy" poem related below, is similiar, but definitely slanted to mommy

Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: had wanted to post this poem sooner, but just before father's day is still good :-)
a few years after i wrote this (had sold it for several yrs in malls personalized for gifts with other work from my wife sheila), i read it at a small poetry group in galveston, where each of us would get feedback from the group
i sometimes think of the burly gifted poet there who gruffed that he'd been "tricked," saying the poem started out so light, he hadn't seen the progressive deepening of feeling it evoked in him
it meant a lot to me then, and it means a lot to me now, "thank you"

If Dad's Were...
If Dad’s were buzzsaws
you’d be the cutting edge.
If Dad’s were trees
you’d shade all my days.
If Dad’s were cars
you’d have the best warranty
and best long term value.
If Dad’s were mountains
you’d show me the path
past the roughest of boulders.
If Dads were diamonds
you’d be the rough but
polished stone
showing me the value of promise.
And if Dad’s were change
in one’s pocket, you’d be
the gem of a coin carrying
value from a past
worth saving , into my future.

Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: like the related poem recommended below, this poem allows me to search for images that come to mind as i think about my mom, and allow the feelings within surface
the main difference is this one speaks to what my mom "is" like, while "if mom's were" allows to what a mom "would be like" if they were such and such, also allowing for feelings and images to surface as i focus on the subject, in this case, my mom :-)
i like both methods of conjuring images and feelings, and have used it for many subjects, including other family and even pets; i find it really helps bring out nuances specific to my own experiences, and found that expressed as they do, connect to how many other people do as well - at that point, the poem also becomes a sharing between myself and the person choosing it as a gift for someone they care for, adding another layer of meaning to my own efforts

Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: written by my wife for her own mother
as it turned out, it was her mom's last mother's day, and even fuller with meaning than originally realized
though the comparison imagery sheila used poignant and inflected strong and delicate feelings back and forth, i thought the ending lines were particularly nicely writ

A Daughter's Mother
A Special bond
has been ours to share,
so unique that it’s beyond compare.
It is strong -
passed from one generation to the next;
weathering stormy times,
bending with the wind.
It is fragile -
like a bud on a flower;
blooming and flourishing
when cherished and cared for.
It is sensitive -
felt in a glance, heard from afar,
touched by a sigh.
It is always there -
and when i stop and think
what I’m about to do --
I ask myself, is it deja vu?
Or is it you?

Original Poetry from Adan Lerma
A Gift for RememberingTM
Artist's Comment: an adorable little poems from a little one's point of view
many a daddy or older sibling had us personalize this one for a young one
and many of these older siblings and other parents often expressed they wouldn't mind sharing these same thoughts of things to do with their own mom
some things we just don't need to out grow :-)

Mommy
Mommy,
show me how
to make all kinds of fat
cookies - then let me test them.
Mommy, read me a
story and let me make all
of the noises for all of the animals.
Mommy, then take me to
the park. And let’s stay til it
gets just past dark.
Mommy, take me
to your work
and let me
call all my friends.
Mommy, sing me a song
so I can say the words too. And
Mommy. Promise me we’ll do it
all over again
tomorrow.

to explain, understand...how
our past could still be of use -
aid our future - our now
nebulous futures of possibilities:
new biologies
waxing wanting new creations -
new engines
carrying us far ... on and from
our earth, our home -
births of futures even astrology
can’t predict, hasn’t known

new deaths, last breathes
postponed prolonged protected -
no connection to any creations born before

History Teacher
Now often struggling to explain
how an understanding of our past
can still aid the future - our now
nebulous futures of possibilities.
A new biology wanting to create
a new creationism. New extensions
of limb and life. New engines
carrying us far from home here on
earth. With eventual births where
even astrology would not be of help.
New deaths with our last breath
postponed, prolonged, protected.
No connection to any creature
living who has ever lived our new
present coming into being. But, a
connection still. To everyone around
us. And what we’ve brought into
this new day with us - the history
of our thoughts and dreams. The
history of our weaknesses and strengths.
A history the history teacher can
help us understand and use.
